Geoff Nunberg's "The Way We Talk Now"

I was first introduced to Geoff Nunberg whilst listening to NPR’s Fresh Air with Teri Gross. She has (or had, I haven’t listened in a while now) him on from time to time to talk about, of course, linguistic stuff. And I’ve always enjoyed what he has to say. So much so that I grabbed his book the first time I saw it when browsing a book store quite a while ago.

I’ve always been somewhat interested in language. And Nunberg does a great job of explaining the ins and outs of it. I think a lot of people take language for granted as just being there. Especially since they tend not to ever notice the constant shifts that language undergoes. Because it’s either too subtle… or happens to slowly for one person to notice. A lot of people seem to convey that the way they talk now, or should, is the way it "is" and the way it was always supposed to be. OR that this is how it's done "where they come from". OR they just don't think on it. At all. Which sadly is the way a lot of people think about a lot of things. (Ah, but it does manifest in grumpy old men, doesn’t it? Bitching about “the way it used to be”. But that’s funny. Because of course there were grumpy old men when they were younger, bitching about how much better it was back when they were young. And so on.) My favorite example of this is something Nunberg talks about in the first section of TWWTN, “The Passing Scene” which is about just that. The part I’m talking about it called “As a Cigarette Should”. He recounts a Winston cigarette ad campaign that KNOWINGLY used incorrect grammar to sell cigs. “Like a cigarette should”! Can you imagine!?!? It was the beginning of the end.

He continues on to sections about history, politics, attitudes, technical aspects, and a little bit on specific jargon. He never tries to tell you what’s “right” or “wrong” about what you might do, which I think is one thing that really appeals to me, even though I’m sure it’s not at all rare among those that do what he does. It’s a science. Science doesn’t judge, it just reports. All in all, I think it’s a fantastic taste of the intricacies of language, linguistics, and the way we talk to each other. Now.

This book hasn’t changed me in any way. Hasn’t convinced me to start doing something a certain way. Although it did help me justify my own personal abuses of language. Because, ya know, language is organic. It’s just a tool to communicate a concept. And using fucking capital letters at the beginnings of sentences doesn’t do a god damn thing to help communicate my point, does it?

Well apparently it does, sometimes. But I don’t care about those times. Unless of course it’s a time when someone asks me really really nicely because they have some silly issue with it. J

One thing is sure though: it really, really helped his opponent Rob Miller. The South Carolina Democrat had already attempted to unseat Wilson in 2008, but came a few votes short. Now, following Wilson's moment, Miller has already raised $75,000 and counting from progressives who want to unseat Wilson.

here's where we see the ultimate stupidity in wilson's outburst. it worked on me too. after palin was picked as mccain's VP, i did something i had never ever done: i donated money to a politician. to "the other guy". because in a two party system, the people i'd say are most reasonable end up framing it as the lesser of two evils. but when that greater of two comes out with some serious shit? man you swing the other way fast. especially when the example comes so stark! in a speech where a guy is calling for cooler heads and manners, to have someone heckle him with the exact opposite!? it don't get much better. and you get the added benefit of the more reasonable majority of society starting to get sick and tired of the bullshit.

and "joe" wilson just gave his opponent $75 grand. and counting.

you can debate the issue of "decorum". seems to me he pretty clearly crossed a line that has not been crossed before. i mean, code pink is one thing. but a member of congress? man, that's fucking classless. more so than any argument you could think of to call my adjective classless. or even , dare i say, veep cheney's similar comment. the guy's an ass. i'd rather not have him in congress. but i don't think he should be removed. i think he should be mocked.

this is my main problem with "populism". because inevitably the population will get in over its head, and make an ass of itself. the problem i see is, more and more, the population refuses to recognize that instant. and they push further. i fucking hate it when people say "i'm not a doctor but..." or insert whatever highly trained profession. because it means they're about to say something they're completely unqualified to say, but for some reason have convinced themselves it's still a valid observation. hell, i'm sure sometimes it is. but to me it just sounds like "hey, i'm not a surgeon, but if I were doing your brain surgery..." maybe you've hit on a valid technique? but you should probably shut the hell up.

anyway. honestly, i think team obama saw this fact a while ago. and they gave it a little nudge. held back on the "full plan" push. instead, chose to push some buttons. this seems very "rahm" to me. he got a LOT of great ad fodder. scenes where a sea of republicans sat on their hands when everyone else applauded the sentiment of people not dying because they couldn't afford it? genius. see rove's genius was in the organization it took to focus a message of telling you what was wrong with his opponents. they're evil. whatever. but here we see operation "give 'em rope". i'd say it has the propensity to last longer. because it doesn't take any effort to sustain.

i bounce over PZ's blog here and there. i started during the whole dover board of ed. thing. because he occasionally has some good stuff on religionist movements...

which brings us to this poll. a religionist movement AND the awesome broader topic of retarded unscientific internet polls. the reason i enjoy PZ and polls is that he has a pretty huge audience. and, well, they're kind of angry. in a way. and rather mischievous. so when PZ is alerted to a stupid poll online, well, all he has to do is mention it on his blog, and his readers go and completely fuck it up.

take this one, for instance, about the town of kissimmee in florida considering putting "in god we trust" on a new city logo. in an excellent example of "push polling", by a newspaper, mind you, the choices for the question "Should Kissimmee add "In God We Trust" to its official city logo?" are, and i quote:

I don't know. What's wrong with leaving it the way it is?

notice how they've decided for you why you have chosen yes or no.

HAAAHAHAHA. wow. that's marvelous. now, i'm sure the orlando sentinel is going to look at these results and toss them out. which is why things like this are stupid. here we have a ridiculously obvious example of why it's unscientific. and lopsided. but what about when it's not so ridiculous? why would you ever trust the result? what if the local churches mobilized and the sunday sermon was about how people need to go and vote, for jesus? which, i totally would not put past them.

Netflix "Watch Now" issues with Linux

so. a friend of mine has a netflix account. which is great, because that means she gets to be the guinea pig. i've been considering getting one, and would use the "watch now" feature almost exclusively, since my media center hookups consists of a laptop connected to external hard drives, the TV, and my stereo.

but alas, that laptop runs linux.

after a few minutes of googlin', i almost found an answer. i mean, i knew this would be tough, first off, because netflix uses Silverlight. ugh. but i was heartened by the fact that the on demand movies used to only work on windows, but now work on mac. which my guinea pig friend had already discovered. she actually also got netflix mostly for the online watching only to find out it didn't work on her macbook. of course, she says, now that it works on mac... she doesn't watch online all that much...

as most of us know, mac is closer to linux than windows is. so might it work? let's find out...

turns out there is a "silverlight" for lin called "moonlight", by novell. novell makes SuSE, though right? this could be good!

stumbling block: before you even get to find out, netflix of course does a platform check... and sends you to the above screen, again... because you're in linux and as far as it knows, you're not supposed to be able to do this.

BUT WAIT. there's more!

apparently there's a user agent switcher plugin for firefox. it's in the developers bin. what a user agent switcher does is basically just change the text tags that platform checkers look at. in essence? it's a liar. there's other talk of using a virtual machine to run win inside your lin, but fuck that, right? this needs to work proper.

now, the default user agent options in the switcher don't work. they all say "windows vista" which is what we want, but the only browser options are opera, netscape, and IE. no problemo: go to the help > About Mozilla Firefox section of the menu bar. that last bit of gobbly gook on the box that pops up is your user agent.

so going to my work PC where the netflix on demand works on my firefox, i got this setup for the user agent:

so close. apparently this issue now is that moonlight needs to get on the ball and handle the new silverlight.

i couldn't find much talk on this topic since early 2008. but that guy had a good thing going with the user agent switcher. his issue was getting around the directx. but now netflix supports non directx by working on mac! but sadly it still needs silverlight.

so i'm close. but i haven't gotten there yet. i would appreciate any feedback from anyone who happens on this. i post this here because i couldn't find much on the ol' internets. so hopefully those with the same issues as i will stumble on this and get some help and maybe build on it!

so i was without car for about a month. because i was hit by a DC driver. because he wanted to change lanes so he wouldn't rear end the huge-assed roadwork truck in his lane. that we could see coming for a while.

his explanation to the insurance adjuster: "i had my blinker on. he should have let me over."

this is why i call DC drivers "entitled". people think this makes me racist. because "entitled" is one of those buzzwords. i say i didn't say what skin color the guy had. i believe that makes you racist for assuming.

but i digress.

so since this guy all but confessed to being the problem, the rental he was driving had an insurance company, and they had to pay for everything. well, almost. apparently replacing a 3 month old wheel bearing constitutes "bettering" the car and i have to pay for part of it. i say bullshit. but that's an argument for a later time...

the shop that fixed it was Mark's Body Shop in Baltimore, MD. they were ok. i mean, the people were great and their attitude was great and they vowed to fight the ins. company if they tried to weasel out of paying for something... but they also told me my car would be ready by june 1st. and since they couldn't explain to the ins. company what the delay was, i couldn't get a rental out of it. which sucked.

but then, on the second last day i was promised the car, they had to do the final alignment, and it turned out i needed two more parts. so then i actually got a rental again. for a day. and then my car was done!!

picked it up today. decided it'd be a good idea to get some gas on the way back. we pulled in to a gas station that was apparently giving away free money, because it was loooooaded with cars. i pull up in line behind this one car. and we wait. and wait. some d'bag had left his car at the island and came back from the shop with some goodies. THEN gassed his car. ass.

BUT WAIT. the car in front has left. there's a car at the last pump (there are three). the car in front of me pulls forward...... AND stops at the first pump.

wtf?

three guys pull up on the other side of the island. whilst one is pumping, the other two go to the shop. the second one backtracks two steps, turns and looks down our lane, looks at me and says something about moving up for me. i didn't catch all of it...

but after this woman finishes pumping she looks at me, points behind me and says "back up". i look over my shoulder. and i say "no."

"back up so i can get out!" there was a mercedes SUV in that second pump now. she appears to make her case to him about how horrible a person i am.
"no. you're the one who didn't pull up to the next pump and made me wait. so now it's your turn."
"you're an asshole"
"so are you."
the kids to my left are smiling at this point. one looks at me and says "i feel you man." i give him the knowing nod.

the SUV finishes and backs out. bitch doesn't move. apparently she wasn't actually in a hurry to get anywhere. she just thought i should adjust my life for her benefit. because she still sits. and sits.

"are you a fucking child?" i yell out the window.
"haaaaaahahahahahahhaaha" goes the kid.

i pull around her to the third pump. then she pulls around me. because now she has apparently made her point. a point which, to me, sounded like "i'm a fucking five year old throwing a temper tantrum". she pulls around me and rolls down her window.

i absolutely hate this place. i ended up there after the GEICO people suggested i go to one of their locations instead of my dealer, for my 2004 mini cooper. boy was that a bad idea.

i went in for some repairs on a broken driver side window, and some cosmetic damage from the break-in. i had actually had the window repaired at safelite already, but they told me (and showed me) that i had some internal door damage. this was december 30 2008. it is now april 6 2009 and the issue is still not cleared up.

the GIECO rep, Moiria, is quite frankly incompetent. during the initial assessment of the car, i mentioned some broken parts inside my door. and described them. repeatedly, so she wouldn't forget. she forgot. she also forgot to replace some window trim. and when my car was at the garage, my shifter knob was damaged.

after i got my car back the first time... the door could not be opened from the inside! i mean, they hadn't even replaced the parts inside the door, but they managed to screw it up. they also did a sloppy job installing my A-frame trim pieces. if you have a coop, or have seen one, this is the vertical plastic piece between the windshield and the side window. when i got the car back again after the case of the non-opening door was solved, i got a sliver in my hand from my shifter knob whilst driving out of the lot. what the hell? i looked around it and found a chip on the side of the shifter knob. that was most certainly not there before. i have no idea how they did that.

they never call you. i was told multiple times that they'd "call when the parts came in". then i'd go for a week or so hearing nothing. i'd call back and they'd say "oh yeah the PART is here, come in". i'd ask if they had all THREE parts. and then of course after being on hold for a few minutes, it became. "oh. uh. we'll call you when the parts come in..." the last time, Moiria even repeated herself, putting emphasis on the fact that "THEY would call ME"...

then i'd wait a few more weeks. i'm a grad student, near the end of my dissertation. i don't have time to sleep let alone think about chasing after someone to do their job correctly. so then i'd get a call asking why i'd never come in. then i'd tell them i never received my call. then they'd tell me i did. like i WANT to be driving around in a car that needs to be repaired but just chose not to?

i called to bring my car in this past friday, to have the last three parts installed. they said it'd take a half hour, but they were busy so could i come in on monday. i brought the car in at 10am on monday, and all of a sudden now it's "a couple hours".

now, as of 5pm, i haven't heard anything yet. i'm about to call them. but i'm not optimistic.

EDIT: no good. i got the car back but guess what? the window doesn't go down all the way. yeah, that's right. they screwed it up AGAIN.

AND it turns out that they weren't supposed to give me the rental car they gave me. now, i know i don't have rental coverage on my insurance. but they went right in to the rental car setup like it was a foregone conclusion. i declined the rental the last few times i was in. so i honestly just figured they were doing the decent thing, and comping me a rental because they only reason i was there was because they can't get this shit right the first... or second... or third time i came in.

NOR did the enterprise guy tell me that i was supposed to return the car to a different location. he was there, in the morning. and i got the car there, at the shop. so when i came back to pick up my car... well i drove myself in the rental. and i asked for my car. they asked if i took the rental back.

i said "wull. i brought it."
"no, you need to return in to enterprise."
"what?"
"didn't you do it last time you had a rental?"
"i never had a rental."
"oh. it's about a mile up the road."
"what? how the hell am i going to get back here?"
"oh they'll give you a ride."

well isn't that sweet?

i find the enterprise place and then i find out about how Moiria assured them i had rental car coverage. but then GEICO told them i didn't. so they have to "freeze the contract" whilst they figure out wtf is going on.

i wait around for another 15 minutes, and finally get a ride to the shop. and pick up my car. and drive home. at which point, i try the window.

guess i shoulda tried that before i left the lot.

i'd recommend staying away from this place, much like one does with the plague.

Montana state Rep. Robyn Driscoll, a Democrat who represents the 51st District, has introduced a bizarre bill calling for the elimination of all "pit bulls" from the state. If the bill, H.B. 191, becomes law, owners must surrender their pit bull dogs which must then be euthanized within 10 days.

Those who don't give up their dogs to be killed? Well, any peace officer is authorized to obtain a search warrant and come and get the dog.

The National Canine Research Council reports that between 1965 and 2008, there were 3 fatalities in Montana from dog bites. Yes, 3 in 43 years. In 2005 alone, just one year in Montana, 1,400 people died from smoking and 251 in traffic accidents.

so here it is. three kids died due to shitty parenting therefore rep. driscoll wants to kill dogs. if you've ever owned a dog, this infuriates you too. unless there's something wrong with you. like driscoll. and like that fucking marine (a warning... don't click that if you cry easily).

i mean, you don't really get the full effect unless you live here. i remember learning about how DC essentially was living like pre-revolutionary america and thinking "hey, that's funny." but it's not. it's not funny at all. for all the bluster and patriotism and over-the-top love-it-or-leave-it attitude in this country... DC is getting royally fucked by the exact thing we went to war with england over: we don't get to decide what happens to us.

sure, there's a DC city council. whatever. they get bitch slapped around by the US congress all the time. by people that live in DC as much as dubya lived in texas for the past 8 years. oh wait. that was probably more...

DC has no representation in congress. not really. we have EHN, yeah... but all she can really do is bitch. granted, she does it well... and sometimes gets things to happen... but when you get down to it, all the residents of the district of columbia, including myself, aren't worth as much as every other american who has two senators and a representative to speak for them.

and yeah, you may say "ehh, what's the big deal?" to which i say, fine. give up your congresspeople. let people that don't visit much have a say in what goes on in your town. and better yet, add in that you're the only one that has to throw in some extra tax money to deal with all the bullshit that happens because of what belongs to the whole country like presidential security for special events and people from alabama showing up wearing tshirts with graphically mutilated fetuses on them and getting on your traincar on your way to work and blocking your streets making you late and distracting all your police from dealing with all the everyday problems every city has which is actually worse in your city because you don't have enough control over your city because it's run by those fucking outsiders!

I know, you're probably thinking this is a horrible pour. But it's not. There are some beers for which i prefer to have a larger than normal head (heheh). And this is one of them.

The reason is that more suds can mean more aroma. And this is a beer that you wanna take allll in. Through the nose as well as the mouth.

Sadly, the suds will go down quickly. So you gotta enjoy it whilst you can. However, the fact that it will go down quickly is what also makes it not such a bad idea. And i would recommend drinking it at slightly below room temp. I keep mine on a shelf in my dining room. Which is at about 68°F at the moment.

Sadly, the last time was because the GPS had accidentally been left on the seat.

But the new one is still mine, fuckhead! Apparently this fuck thinks i'm as dumb as he is. Like i'd leave the GPS In there, not in plain sight.

But they rummaged through the whole car. The glove box was open with contents all over the floor. my little custom Mini tray that sits under the E-break was flipped up. And I have rubbermaid boxes in the back with car stuff: cables, gas can, etc. In fact... they even left the small CD book with probably about 50 CDs of songs they wouldn't want to listen to.

So they got nothing. And i got a $230 window bill.

'but dan,' you might say. 'how could they be the stupid fuck when you're the one with another broken window?'

'well,' I'd reply, 'the stupid fuck left behind the screwdriver he used to bust in.'

Am considering some macgyveristic fingerprint lifting techniques... Now alls i gotta do is find a way for that to mean something...

Because I had to wait fucking over 3 hours for the cops to show after i called. when i called back after 2 hours they said the officer had been here, and left. because there was no one there.

of course, people will always bitch about statistics. because it's possible to skew them to say what you want. and then they will look as reasonable as a valid analysis, so who's to say who was right?

well nate silver was right.

the thing is, when stats predict the wrong result... it isn't the data's fault. it is the interpreter. for any sort of modeling, assumptions need to be made. that's why it's called a "model" and not "the real thing". so you need to extrapolate along time and space.

the democratic primaries didn't show us that stats were bullshit. they showed us that that standard assumptions were no longer valid.

enter a whiz at sabermetrics, nate silver.

the whole point of sabermetrics is that it be based on objective observation. now, of course, being human automatically means absolute objectivity is impossible. but you can get close. and he does. i think the most important aspect of his work was the aggregation. he doesn't collect the data himself. he aggregates and analyzes everyone else's data. looks at how they were collected, how those techniques may skew the data one way or another, makes corrections, and looks again.

so how did he do?

well the final analysis before election day, he called 348.6 electoral votes for obama. 189.4 for mccain. the tally at the moment, without NC and MO called is 349 for obama and 159 for mccain.

if mccain gets both uncalled states, nate knocks it out of the park. as it stands right now, i'd call it an in the park homer. it looks like NC will go blue and MO will go red. which will put obama at 362. which is, as far as i'm concerned, a mandate, at over 350 EVs. but that's another topic altogether...

the other amazing thing is his call for the popular vote, too. 52.3% blue, 46.2% red. by most accounts at this point the split is tallied at 52% blue, 46% red. and that might even just be a round to the nearest full percent.

so to all the nay-sayers and math haters that just can't bring themselves to trust "the numbers". try to remember: numbers are always right. the number cruncher isn't...

see, they latch on to the semantics like white on rice. just like the "spread the wealth" unfortunate phrasing or that obama will be "tested by our enemies". it doesn't really matter what the words mean, it's the words that are important to them. obama meant spread the government's wealth. but they latch on to the marxist meaning of spreading the citizens' wealth. biden simply meant obama'd have to deal with some serious shit. mccain applied his own connotation of "test" to it and said it was bad. no reasonable person would have heard biden's comment and thought he meant that obama would be learning on the fly.

and so, having some sort of leadership title at one time or another means you have more "executive" experience, which is the important kind, apparently. of course, this doesn't matter when it comes to mccain. as a lifelong congressman, he has "no executive experience" either. so essentially, based on this argument, mccain and obama are equal in the type of experience that matters for bein' president.

but logic doesn't tend to work on these people anyway...

so do me a favor. pop over to your closest 6500 people town. stop by the mayor's office. see what the mayor's responsibilities are. what kind of crises they need to take care of.

wait wait. easier still, watch an episode of "the andy griffith show". and then think on whether or not that was good enough to go out and deal with national and international issues.

sadly, i guess these people lives are so fucking small that they conclude that it does.

but the thing is... i'm not saying that these people are useless. i'm not even saying they're unfit for their eastbumfuck offices. but we seem to have developed this culture in some parts of the country where 'the american dream' now means that anyone can do anything they want, regardless of ability.

like when i get in to arguments with construction workers about science. just because his opinions on science may be retarded, doesn't mean he's a bad construction worker. in the same vein, i'm also not going to show up at his jobsite and start telling him how things should be done. just because i built a birhouse this one time. however there's nothing wrong with showing up at the jobsite, asking questions and getting to know how things work... and then maybe a few days in asking why they don't do something one way that appears to be a better idea to me. and they have every right to say "hey, shut up, i'm workin' here."

but at least you need to get some idea of the actual job before stickin' your nose in it.

of course that doesn't mean that you have to know everything about the job to conclude someone is unfit, either. because some things just stare you in the face. as well as some attitudes. and when someone says they can totally do a job that, a month or so prior they were wondering to the media what, exactly, one does in that position... well that's just a deal breaker for me.

it's not like the VP of the USA is an obscure position that not many people know about...

i still say we impose a poll quiz for a political knowledge minimum in order to vote... but i hear that makes me either racist, sexist, fascist, or communist. i'm not sure which. perhaps all ten.

i mean, yeah i'm not a political analyst. i'm not "classically trained", if you will. and he's got guys that work on this stuff. old guys. that have been doing this stuff for a long time. and even most of the talking heads (and blogs) don't know what in the fuck he was thinking. and yeah, you really can't escape the discussion now, and i'm just adding to the noise...

but i have a few ideas. none of which strike me as good.

i was reading this one article a while back that mentioned how picking a running mate that's strong where you're weak may seem like a good idea but it only exaggerates your own shortcomings. i don't agree that will hold every time... but in this case? oh yes. and it's already out there. of which aspect do i speak? the age, of course.

because now mccain looks like a creepy old man. or at least, his veep looks like the 'kid sister'. ok i mean kid granddaughter.

the first thing i thought, though, came from hillary. whilst everyone else was focusing on the "he's clearly trying to grab all those bitter hillary backers" point, instead i thought of hillary's first run for NY senate. one of the huge things that worked in her favor, was the bullying dooshness of rick lazio. he really looked like he was trying to physically intimidate her during the debates. and the backlash was huge. and i'm thinking... maybe the think that'll work with biden.

but i don't think it will.

the other ridiculous thing is her practically nonexistent "experience". people try to draw a parallel between her lack of experience and obama's.

but there's kind of a big problem with that. because before the actual 'in office' experience... palin was a PTA hockey mom and local sports news anchor whilst obama was a constitutional law professor. which one might help you be president more?

although one could make a case for us being a nation of children, i suppose...

i actually respect obama's pick of biden. because it wasn't his best pick for a "running mate". there were way more people out there to pick that can help him get elected, which makes me think he picked a guy he thinks will be a good vice-president (regardless of if it is true or not). and a guy he knows well and works with a lot. i've seen lots of clips of obama and biden talking and laughing way prior to these campaigns.

on the contrary... mccain and palin met one time before he met with her to tell her he picked her. so she seems like she's picked to be a good running mate. and not a vice-president. i can't imagine who thinks she'd be a good prez or vice-prez.

you know why else? because i didn't get this info until the second email. the first one i got told me to reformat the card even though my ORIGINAL message said that the phone COULD NOT REFORMAT THE CARD. no extra info. still said "4GB microSD card".

are people actually required to be familiar with the products, to work in your tech support department, or not? is it just a crapshoot to get someone that knows anything?

this is an unacceptable level of incompetence as far as product documentation goes. this is basic information. but i noticed that it includes a section on "turning on your phone".

it's enough to nearly make me wanna pay a lawyer a bazillion dollars an hour just to sue verizon for the twenty bucks the card cost me...

not that i really want to spread the use of this word. but, as dante once said "give credit where credit's due".

so i'd just like to point out the the first usage of the "word" i heard was on a Monday October 24, 2005 episode of the CTV show "corner gas":

This show is just very funny. This particular episode shifts the focus (not for the first time) away from Brent to let some of his excellent co-workers shine. We get Lacey who just cannot leave well enough alone (stop me if you've heard this before) and ruins Brent's staycation. At least until she finally understands and takes a staycation of her own.
